It is common to be cautious about the security of our smartphones and computers, yet a lesser-known risk affects devices we use daily: our wireless earphones. A significant security issue has been identified that could potentially allow hackers to intercept audio from Apple’s AirPods.
The security concern, identified as CVE-2024-27867, revolves around an authentication flaw that impacts several of Apple’s audio products. This includes the AirPods (2nd generation onwards), all versions of the AirPods Pro, the AirPods Max, and also extends to the Powerbeats Pro and Beats Fit Pro.
The problem arises when these devices attempt to connect to a known, previously paired device. A hacker within the proximity necessary for Bluetooth to function could masquerade as a familiar device, gaining unauthorized access to the earphones. This could allow them to eavesdrop on conversations carried out via these devices.
How to Stay Safe
The flaw was discovered by Jonas Dreßler, after which Apple promptly issued a firmware update aimed at mitigating the risk. Users are urged to update their devices to protect against potential eavesdropping.
Go to Settings on your Apple device, select Bluetooth, and then tap on the info button next to your AirPods. Within this menu, you will find an About section where the current firmware version is listed and can be updated.
Keeping your AirPods updated is a crucial step in safeguarding them from hackers. Outdated software contains security gaps that hackers exploit to gain unauthorized access to your data and device functions.

While it may not pose as serious a threat as Mac malware, this vulnerability could still be exploited by cybercriminals in their attacks. If you do not want anyone else to listen in on your private conversations, it is important to update your AirPods immediately!
